Probably not, between the eastern and western church there was a leadership dispute, not a doctrinal one. The Roman church accepts the belief system of the eastern church and vice-versa.
As far as your statement on Luther..he decided to try to reform and challenge the church from without rather than within. The Catholic church has always been able to accept and deal with questions within the confines....however, Luther nailed his opinions on the wall and defied the church to challenge him.....they did.
He had to take that step because they wouldn't listen. Where in human history do you find Establishments agreeing to stop making money when someone points out that the way they're doing it is immoral? Doesn't happen. So he took it to the 1500's equivalent of "social media."
