I remember it was around 1979, I had never listened to jazz before, and one day was flipping channels, and I saw a bunch of these long-haired guys who looked like a typical rock band playing Jazz,
it was The Pat Metheny Group, and I was mesmerized. Next day, I went straight to Peaches to gobble up all of his albums, and got hooked, still a huge fan to this day.
My business partner in the 80’s was a jazz saxaphonist (and a very good one), who liked “Song X”. Took me a while to appreciate it.
Sun Ra was another.
