Slippery Elm doesn’t have multiple uses but for some conditions it is very useful. I remember buying Thayer’s slippery elm lozenges for sore throat many years ago.
Slippery Elm
organs affected: lung, stomach
Part used: inner bark both powder and cut and sifted
Properties: yin tonic, demulcent, nutritive, expectorant, emollient, vulnerary
Uses:
Powder:
It is used to treat sore throat, coughs, bleeding from the lungs and other lung problems, dry throat, wasting diseases, digestive problems, nausea.
This is one of the most mucilaginous herbs. A thin gruel can be made by slowly mixing cool water into the powdered herb until a thick porridge-like consistency is acheived. This may be flavored with a little honey or dash of cinnamon and is a good food to give, even to infants when there is difficulty keeping food down. This gruel may be given for any wasting diseases.
It is good for colitis and ulcers, it is a strengthening herb that can be taken freely. A tea using hot water can be made but the cut and sifted form of the herb needs to be used rather than the powder, as described above.
PS - Slippery Elm has a very slightly sweetish pleasant taste, even with nothing added.
