1918 flu was H1N1. The highest mortality rate for that flu was the 25-26 yr old cohort. And that’s because H1N1 leverages your immune system against you, the stronger it is the more likely you are to suffer a cytokine storm and suffocate.

My aunt died of diphtheria at age 11. Horrible way to die. They had no diphtheria vaccines at that time. My grandfather was a very godly man. He was not able to pray out loud for a year after her death. Overcome with heavy grief.
