On December 19, 2018, the Pentagon said both that there would be no withdrawal, AND that a withdrawal had begun.
Even after two years, people are unable to grasp that Trump makes it impossible for our enemies to know what’s happening. He DECEIVES our enemies by making false statements.
Finally, nobody can argue that Trump is coddling China. We freed North Korea from China, almost certainly through the use of military force. Behold the USS Jimmy Carter returning home flying the Jolly Roger, indicating the successful completion of a COMBAT mission.

My guess is that Mattis’s resignation letter is his last act of military deception (MILDEC). It’s intended to make Trump’s enemies think he’s losing control of his presidency.
“It’s always great to be underestimated” said Donald John Trump before he was elected.
Those who underestimate him often don’t live to regret it.
