I buy the latest technology. Right now taking steps to get new iPhone Xs Max. Interesting that Apple has not adopted 5G, though likely a premature conclusion.

Commonsense is good idea with a phone. Use a headset. My recurring challenge is to get my boys to not use iPads sitting on their lap.

“That it is particularly dangerous above and beyond the already-present radiation dangers with existing wireless technologies.

Don’t put your cell phone in your pocket next to your gonads, and if you use it a lot, use speaker so it’s not pressed up right against your head all the time, and you’ll be proof against any reasonable radiation threat.”

Hogwash. I’m an EE, and in the medical device world as well.

Complete BS. Fake science, brought by the same anti-roundup people.

5G is fantastic! No more friken ripoff $$$ hardwired internet!!!

Life changing, for all of us. And “net neutrality” kept it from happening. Thank God for Trump!!!!

My first thought after reading the first two paragraphs and arriving at the old ‘microwave causes cancer’ ploy is that the RBOCS (Comcast(Xfinity), Verison, etc.) feel threatened like a spurned spinster at a Kavanaugh hearing.

If I am seeing this correct in a historical context, 5G represents a decentralization of the last mile allowing all sorts of homegrown ISPs to get in the game. RBOCs can’t have that.

No. It’s the network topology - smaller cells and more of them - that’s the issue.

5G uses the same wavelengths as microwave ovens. Don’t watch the food cook!

It competes with cable and landlines so there are lots of companies that are not happy to see it. %G exists in most other countries. Its pretty darned fast. And its likely that millennial would never pay a cable bill or a land line bill if 5G became common.

BINGO!

While I’m not itch’n For a 5G phone because of range limitations, I do see it as a viable alternative for home internet. I use Comcast right now, a lower tier (internet only: TV is OTA Tivo and streaming), and uverse is over twisted pair which I don’t find all that attractive. Ma Bell is rolling out 5G in Indy, and I would like to see what they can offer vs. Comcast.

If the cells are smaller then they will require less power. Am I right?

If it’s on the public sidewalk or corner, can’t you build a Faraday shield cage at the same height to protect your property?

5G will deliver broadband internet into homes at much faster speeds than is standard now. You hook up the 5G receiver to your wifi modem and you’re set. Cable companies are scrambling to figure out a response because 5G is much faster than even fiber optic cable, and it’s cheaper because you don’t have to buy right of ways and string cable to each residence.

This article is high on paranoia and low on substance.

First, let me qualify my position as a “5G Expert.” By that, I mean that I manage a major cellular provider’s 5G technology initiative, and probably the first “real” 5G network we will see in the US.

5G is misunderstood by most people, who think of the traditional cell tower (what we call a “macro-cell”) to be their connection point to the wireless network.

In order to achieve wireless gigabit speeds, and account for population density, 5G is really a seamless transition between multiple access vectors to the network.

The future of wireless really many very small access points in high-density areas supplemented by the traditional “macro-cells” in low-population and rural areas. Millimeter-Wave AP’s have ranges literally measured in feet.

In 20 years, I expect every street light and sign post to have a small cell installed on it, with handsets and portable devices roaming between them every 50 feet instead of every 3 miles.

There is no nefarious intent here, or government intrusion into your cellular network, unless it’s at the FISA level. If government wants access to a citizen’s phone calls, it requires a wiretap warrant, same as with a landline.

Femto/Micro Cells are not being spread around for surveillance purposes or as a way bombard people with radiation. Millimeter Wave disperses after 100’ in air. It doesn’t penetrate skin. If anything, it’s safer than the 600mHz radio waves tearing through bodies and walls 24/7 for existing 3G/4G.

The real benefit here will be the ability to finally truly “cut the cord.” 5G will be as fast or faster than most broadband internet currently available, and you won’t be stuck with Comcast/Cox cable anymore.
