Vanity.
McCain's been corrupt for a long time, with his extracurricular activities in Ukraine and who knows where else. For whatever reason, he threw his election to Obama in 2008. Perhaps the FBI blackmailed him into doing that... they knew Obama as president would be great for them.
McCain had to bet everything on nailing Trump, otherwise his own misdeeds would eventually come to light, and there goes his "legacy". Its all about him.
I hope McCain loses his bet.
