Freedom of the press is a right of the People, that is, a right to publish their speech; it is an extension of the right to free speech. ‘Press’ in the Bill of Rights sense refers to the means of publishing. It is most decidedly NOT a right held by some privileged caste, colloquially called ‘the Press’, standing apart from and above the people. There is no anointed priesthood who enjoy exclusive access to the press.

The media and its allies on the left have a conveniently broad idea of what Freedom of the Press includes. It is NOT the freedom to have access, to interrogate, to browbeat, or to intimidate government officials or their subordinates. It is merely the freedom to publish and disseminate without hindrance. The “members of the press” do not have a guaranteed right to pester and annoy during a press briefing. The don’t have a right to a White House press briefing at all! It’s a courtesy that can be extended or withdrawn at the President’s pleasure.
