When the East German business fell apart, and the Germans finally opened up the records business of the Stasi....virtually every single adult in East Germany (16-million total) had some record....some thicker than others. The Germans have been careful not to say how many West Germans had records, but you tend to hear the number of 10-percent (figure 65 million total population in 1990) had records existing.
It would make you wonder about the FBI records, I’d take a guess that over five million records exist....but half of them might be for folks dead for over twenty years.
It is not going to happen, but it would be wonderful to see the list of journalists, editors, and publishers that were on the payroll of the intelligence agencies or considered “agents of influence”.
