Giuseppe Conte dropped his bid to form a new government comprising the Five Star Movement and League parties after he was rebuffed by the Uniparty President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella.
Mattarella objected to the appointment of Paola Savona as economy minister, according to the Italian news agency ANSA. Mattarella is a former politician of the Uniparty "Left" in Italy.
Italy now faces the prospect of a new election.....

Aldo Moro (Italian President of the Christian Democrat Party) was threatened by Henry Kissinger in NYC in 1975 to not form a coalition govt with the Communists or he’d pay the ultimate price. In 1978 Moro did, was kidnapped and assassinated.
Not sure what is going on here, but outside forces could be applying pressure as they did in 1975.
They’ll have to break up the country.

Well, you certainly choose your facts selectively. The Soviets very publicly opposed the alliance, on the grounds that the Italian Communist party was drifting away from its influence. He was captured by the Soviet-aligned Red Brigades, who demanded the release of their founders. Italy refused, and he was executed. Suggesting that the Red Brigades did the work of the CIA is turning the universe upside-down.
