“Trump, of course, is a magnificent exception. We cannot do without the man: he fights.”
But he is only one man. In the same way that a parent’s legacy is ultimately defined by the success of his/her kids, Trump’s legacy will be defined by whether other Republicans, and the party, develop a BACKBONE, and whether they show that they can fight on the same level as the Democrats. We’re certainly not there yet, but once in a while there’s a comment or two from some Republican that shows he’s ‘getting it’ a bit.
The lessons of the Trump method will be especially potent if he produces a “red wave” defying political precedents and keeping the House in GOP hands. Even now, there are signs that GOP state and local candidates are “getting it.” Yesterday, driving through central Florida, I saw a street sign touting a Republican country commission candidate as a “Conservative Outsider.”
