According to the article, insurgents used a Russian-made 82mm automatic mortar to attack a Russian airbase in Syria. The Vasilek is like a big blowback machine gun that fires mortar rounds. It looks like a small antitank gun but can both direct fire like a cannon and high-angle fires like a mortar.

It loads 4-round clips from the side of the breech and with a skilled loader, it can really crank out the firepower.

The Soviets used them extensively in Afghanistan, mounted on top of armored personnel carriers to break up Mujahadin ambushes.

Doesn't say anything about Russian casualties.
