By the way, when you listen to the LBJ tapes of him and Johnson, it sounds like he’s the one in charge. LBJ was afraid of him. Johnson knew Hoover was the one person who could bring him down.

Hoover loved America. We could use an FBI director like that today.

Those tapes are a fascinating window on the world of 1960s big-league politics. Much as one might despise LBJ’s political leanings, you had to admire his mastery of tactics.

I always thought it was poetic justice that the very liberals he sought approval from were the ones who cut his throat.
