The reason is simple. The Progressives controlled the media, for all practical purposes, for about 35 years, 1960 to 1995

I don’t know where history is going to pinpoint the start of progressivism, but in my mind it started around GWB election, not 1960. Pre Progressives were just called liberals, and there used to be some democrats, now it’s just progressives and liberals.

It is difficult to pick an exact date, but clearly the media favored Kennedy. He would not have been elected without their support. The media got rid of McCarthy. The media was a major ally of the North Vietnamese. Walter Cronkite was an avid leftist, but he did not admit it until long time after he retired. For a long time he was “the most trusted man in America”. He used his enormous power to push leftist causes and attack Conservatives.
