It started earlier than that. One turning point which drove them absolutely insane was Al Gore’s narrow loss to G.W. Bush, and the whole “hanging chads” recount fiasco. Before that, though, I have to wonder if the country slipped the rails the first time the Clintons lied (”Oh, look! Those billing records were on the dining room table all along!”) and everyone was just expected to play along. It taught them that subverting reality was not only okay, but that they could get away with it at will.
