It all boils down to this: Wales must avoid defeat to at least secure a play-off berth while the Irish know they need victory to keep their hopes alive of reaching Russia 2018. Euro 2016 was special for the Dragons, but a World Cup would mean that much more for Chris Coleman's side, who will have a great chance, in theory, if they clinch a play-off. That's because they will be a seeded side when that draw takes place, though Martin O'Neill's side , likely unseeded, would likely face the prospect of a tougher opponent even if they pull off an unlikely victory at the Cardiff City Stadium. The Irish will bemoan results over the campaign, but it is still in their own hands, though they suffered a blow today when Shane Long was ruled out.

Germany set yet another record on Sunday by beating Azerbaijan 5-1 to complete the best ever campaign by a European side in qualifying for the FIFA World Cup.

Joachim Löw's charges, already assured of a place at next summer's finals in Russia, finished off in Group C by maintaining their 100 per cent record in qualification and ending with an unprecedented goal difference of +39.

They thus bettered the achievement of Spain, who also finished with ten wins from ten in reaching the 2010 World Cup, albeit with a goal difference of +23.

In addition to that record, a total of 21 different players found the net for Die Mannschaft during the qualification campaign, more than any other nation:

Thomas Müller (3), Joshua Kimmich (2), Toni Kroos, Julian Draxler (3), Sami Khedira (2), Serge Gnabry, Jonas Hector, Kevin Volland, Andre Schürrle, Mario Gomez (2), Sandro Wagner (2), Amin Younes, Shkodran Mustafi, Julian Brandt, Timo Werner (3), Mats Hummels, Mesut Özil, Leon Goretzka (2), Sebastian Rudy, Antonio Rüdiger and Emre Can.

The World Cup play-offs will be held on Monday 6 November and Tuesday 14 November, with the tournament group stage draw set for Friday 1 November at the Kremlin State Palace in Moscow.

That should be December 1 not November 1...
The draw for the group stage of the 2018 World Cup will take place on Friday, December 1 at the State Kremlin Palace inside the Moscow Kremlin.
