I’ve read a couple of articles that mentioned the girlfriend and they paint her as traveling a lot, having worked in casinos, being very submissive and verbally abused by the killer. Likely the killer didn’t want a true relationship and paid for her frequent travels but didn’t treat her like a human. He seems to have been a real nasty piece of work all around but rich.
She was apparently traveling in Japan with two female friends and is cooperating. (New Zealand paper)

Interesting information if accurate - this and the info about him taking pictures of the shootings make it appear that the whole outrage is related to his own internal long-time demons and not some cause or external event like big gambling losses - will be interesting to see how it plays out.....
