It’s funny watching Hollywood churn out superhero pictures. The costumes are excellent and CGI has made comic book baddies, explosions, battles, etc. believable on-screen.
But superheroes who were super in part because they represented morality and the righting of wrongs are anathema to amoral Hollywood types, so they have taken to making the superheroes’ secret identities into total bastards or, in some cases, making the superheroes into villains themselves.
Even Thor, for example, who is a god (small g) and not from Earth, is portrayed as a bit of a larrikin when not in costume. Captain America is mocked for his unhip 40s outlook but eventually comes round to being one of the cool kids, led by Robert Downey’s Tony Stark. Of course, Downey is absolutely stealing his paycheck by playing himself when he plays Tony Stark but hey...
I realize that Marvel pioneered the ‘flawed, neurotic personality’ shtick for its characters in the comics even in the 60s but Hollywood has taken it to new levels.
I miss SGT ROCK.
Today, they would probably portray him as a tranny.
The problem with the superhero comic movies is that Hollywood decided to make money and have them watched worldwide so you want to make the movie as neutral as possible. This is a marketing, consumer, capitalism decision. Get as many eyeballs worldwide as possible.
