Mattis relaxed the ROE and visited many Gold Star families. I really can’t see this Marine wanting to lose one troop no matter his color. He did assist Petraeus with the COIN strategy but who knows who did what? We can only wait and see the outcome. So far things are very different in Iraq under Mattis than under Petreaus’s rules. In fact, I think he would much rather see the natives fight their own battles.
