California is a global environmental leader, but its falling behind in one key respect: phasing out gasoline cars. Germany, India, Norway and the Netherlands are moving to ban the sale of gas-powered vehicles by or before 2030, and France and the United Kingdom by 2040.
Heres why California should join that list. It would:
Fight climate change: Every gallon of gas burned emits 20 pounds of carbon dioxide, the main driver of climate change. Transportation is our biggest source of carbon emissions. Shifting to electric vehicles today would cut tailpipe carbon emissions to zero, and total carbon emissions by 75 percent. Why? Because our electricity is clean and getting cleaner. Today, 27 percent of Californias electricity comes from clean, renewable sources like sun and wind. By law, 50 percent of electricity must come from renewables by 2030, and a pending bill would require 100 percent renewable electricity by 2045.
Improve our health: Vehicle emissions are the countrys largest source of air pollution, causing 53,000 premature deaths a year, and increasing the risks of asthma, lung disease and cancers especially in children and the 4 in 10 Californians living near busy roads. Annually, health impacts from vehicle emissions cost California $15 billion.
Create jobs, lift the economy, increase energy independence: Moving from gas cars to electric vehicles would create an estimated 100,000 additional jobs in California by 2030. Teslas factory alone will employ 9,300 with the expansion of the Model 3. Electrification would move dollars from crude oil (mostly imported from OPEC countries and Alaska) to the domestic economy.
California is ready to phase out gas-powered cars because:
The technology is here: Tesla models and the Chevy Bolt already have a range of 220 to 335 miles per charge. Ford is developing a 300-mile range SUV....

After California ran Pete Wilson out, there has been nobody to restrain the political crazies out there;as a result most lefties have become extreme.
I don’t know how that gets fixed.
Well now, a gallon of gasoline weighs approximately 6.3 pounds. Quite a trick to generate over 3 times its weight in CO2. And no one knows the main driver of real climate change. But it is most likely the sun.
Janelle London is part of that massive and growing class of Americans which I term "voluntary morons". Seems she's excelling at it!
The extra mass is oxygen. Most fuels require about 2 or 3 times their mass in oxygen to burn, which becomes CO2 and water vapor. On the other side of the coin, how many pounds of CO2 is the writer of the article creating every day just by breathing?
The San Francisco Chronicle should start any phasing out with this writer. Boy what a dumb ass.
I did a quick search and they claim that the added mass is accumulated from the oxygen atoms gleaned from the atmosphere. I think they are full of crap.
I am still waiting, however, for a reasoned explanation of how 0.04% (the percentage of CO2 in the air) can have such a catastrophic effect.
Personally, I think an excellent start would be to phase out the arrogant, ego-driven gas powered politicians, first. THEN sanity MIGHT have a chance.
Doing a bit of research, the atomic weight of oxygen is 15.999u. The atomic weight of carbon is 12.0107u. Combining two oxygen and one carbon gives a weight of 44.0087u.
Carbon comprises 27.29% of the weight of CO2.
Therefore, is 20 pounds of CO2 are produced by burning 1 gallon of gas (approximately 6.3 lbs), 5.458 of the 6.3 lbs weight of 1 gallon of gas must be comprised solely of carbon atoms. That’s 87%.
Sniff, sniff... Something seems a little off.
Full disclosure: I am no chemist, so these calculations are presented only as a reasonableness check for the stated amount of CO2 produced per gallon of gas.
[[Every gallon of gas burned emits 20 pounds of carbon dioxide,]]
Huh? A Gallon of gas doesn’t even weigh anywhere near 20 lbs- there’s no way CO2 weighs 20 lbs per gallon of gasoline- the co2 doesn’t weigh more than the fuel itself
It’s not accurate. In fact, it’s a complete lie.
A couple of things come to mind. It takes 8 years before the Tesla cars become carbon neutral. Right about then the batteries need to be replaced so figure another 5 or 6 years, maybe 8 before they too are carbon neutral. What exactly was gained? Assuming air pollution is a global event; it doesn't matter if cars in L.A. aren't producing the pollution when the pollution made to make that car is polluting the environment (air, water, and land) somewhere else.
The key ingredients for the batteries have to be mined where boys as young as 4 years old down in the Congo mine these cobalt ingredients. So basically anyone who drives a battery powered car is supporting child slave labor. Kinda takes that whole feel-good aspect right out of it all.
Here is the chemical equations behind the conclusions.

I personally believe that CO2, that we produce, is good for the environment and will spur more plant growth.
So they figured out a new line of attack. It isn't enough that car manufacturers were mandated by Law to sell to 25% of Californians electric cars by the magical date of 2020 or else!!
Now the spineless Scientist Kings, lovers of electricity (generated via hydroelectric dams such as Oroville...ah another mess their cousins at the DWR made mismaintaining the gigantic dams that were built mid-century to give Californians a paradise on earth) have decided to double down on electric cars mandates knowing full well that soon the dams will be decommissioned due to potential dangers, just as they shuttered the clean nuclear generated electricity throughout the State.
Their Earnest and Sincere Mission: to turn modern California into the lost world of their ideal: Maoist China where shuffling peasants walk or ride bikes everywhere. Thus cementing their fartsome fannies on the seats of power as Grand Poohbahs Against Gaseous Emissions, the Ca Air Resources Board! Lest anyone think, “ah I left that dictatorship for the freedom of State x, y, or z", think twice! Where Calif. leads, the automakers must follow. And Moonbeam's Board has no intention of loosening their fascist grip on your car's motive power. Freedom and Fascism do not mix for long! California has little hope of overthrowing the Philosopher Kings of Fake Science.
What can be done to inject reason, facts, reality into the minds of Californians? And to overthrow the ARB, DRW, Teacher's Unions, Truckers Union, etc.? Will there even be a chance of escape if the electric cars can't be driven across the mountains and deserts that divide the state from its freer neighbors? How does one carry a can of electricity for emergencies? Live long enough and all will be revealed!
Coal, nuclear, or natural gas fueled cars to be exact. Now how much carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide is produced to generate 350KWH of electricity?
Have to “book it” as some sort of original sin.
Electricity produced in U.S. average 1.4 pounds of CO2 per kWh
An electric car battery charge = 450 pounds of co2 per full charge. A gasoline powered car = 300 pounds of co2 per tank.
Exactly ... that statement right there invalidates anything else stated in the so-called "article". A gallon of gas weighs about 8 lbs or less. How do you get 20 lbs from 8 lbs?
The bulk of gasoline is, it seems, molecules composed of carbon and hydrogen, and hydrogen doesn’t weigh that much, so it is possible that your calculations and the article’s statement are both roughly right. LTHe flip side is that in photosynthesis plants must use a whale of a lot of CO2 and water to produce a pound of biomass.
“””Fight climate change: Every gallon of gas burned emits 20 pounds of carbon dioxide,...”””
How does a gallon of gas that weighs less than seven pounds produce almost there times its weight in waste?
“Every gallon of gas burned emits 20 pounds of carbon dioxide,
*********
Thats ridiculous.”
Yeah, that caught my attention too. What’s a gallon of gasoline weigh, maybe six or seven lbs? And, carbon dioxide is in a gaseous state. I would have to see the math in this before believing it for sure.
