When I was real young I was forced to stay in civilian barracks, it was a condo, apartment or townhomes or whatever it was. I could hear the neighbors arguing, fighting, flushing their toilets, barfing and on and on. I soon figured these places which started to spring up everywhere in the 1970s was all just part of the decline in the standard of living. I was right. Today, you'd have better luck juggling flaming chainsaws than me renting or buying one of those nasty places. Just my opinion of course.☺

Have you ever lived in an actual townhome? I have for several years and I've had tenants in them for even longer. I've also lived in condos/apartments for years in my early adult life. The noise from an apartment is massive, especially above and below you (which doesn't exist in a townhome, since there are no tenants above or below you by definition).
I never heard anything from my neighbors when I lived at my townhome (for 4 years) and I've never heard a single noise complaint from any of my tenants over the years in my townhomes. Townhomes are usually much better made than condos/apartments and the walls have more insulation and thickness than apartment, and like I've said, have significantly fewer "touch" points than an apartment/condo.
They really are very different living experiences; for me it was moreso going from my last apartment to the townhome I bought than going from that townhome to my first single family home (which was actually 700 sq ft smaller than my townhome, as the townhome was 3 floors and over 2100 sq ft vs 1 floor and 1450 sq ft in the single family home).
