I do believe that over the years, the lyrics changed. This was around the same time that “Amos ‘N Andy” became too ‘offensive’ for the snowflakes of the time. I think that the lyrics to Archie Bunker’s song had to change to appease the same snowflakes.

I have watched the reruns over and over again with the express purpose of listening intently to the lyrics.

In the reruns to which I have listened, Archie Bunker definitely says, “Gee, I loathe a sour ingrate.....”

You have to ask yourself why he would be saying ‘didn’t need no welfare stakes,’ and ‘everybody pulled his weight,’ then make a comment about an automobile. The comment about an automobile does not fit the previous two lines of lyrics.

Dunno. I just remember every time I heard the lyrics on the episodes I watched, it was the LaSalle line. I double-checked the lyrics just to make sure I didn’t hear it wrong, and every one I found had the LaSalle line.

I wonder if they actually changed the song, maybe that may have been the original line, but they changed it.
