When I was in Parris Island, I also had my picture taken in dress blues (actually just the jacket and cap) while still in boot camp. I forget what week it was but it was probably around the middle of boot camp when many had yet to "wash out."

I'm surprised that Dan Rather was able to get that picture if he never graduated.


I have to question the picture itself. I graduated San Diego (still have my issue Golf Clubs and Ray-Bans :-)) in Feb '76. Nobody... NOBODY in my Platoon book was smiling. I don't recall any boot camp pictures, from anyone, where they are.

You are correct. I consulted my 1981 Parris Island yearbook and absolutely nobody in my platoon was smiling.

Boot camp was not a pleasurable experience. But the experience did do me good and made me what I am today.
