ROCKFORD - WARNING: This story contains graphic video of a shooting death. It was distributed to show that a security guard's actions in use of deadly force were justified. Viewer discretion is advised.
The Metro Security Officer who shot and killed an armed bank robber after the robber pointed a gun and fired at him will not be charged in the shooting.
The Winnebago County State's Attorney's office has determined the use of deadly force was justified given the life-threatening danger the bank robber presented.
34-year-old Laurence Turner entered the bank on North Mulford Road in the late afternoon of January 20th and fired a shot into the ceiling. Video shows him shooting once into the air, and that's when security officer Brian Harrison and Turner exchange gunfire before Turner then attempts to flee, collapsing from his wounds in the doorway. He died at the scene.
Turner is also suspected of other bank robberies in the area, two of which involved gunshots into the ceiling of the bank.
Interesting point, but as a lawyer, I would never have made such comments in public. In private, to a client, yes, but being critical, I would never have made such a comment to non clients, in public. It could be later interpreted as a desire to “shape the totality of the evidence.”
It’s not bad advice, but not for the public.
The one thing I teach PUBLICLY, re: 911 calls, is the frist thing to say is “This is an Emergency. I’m at the corner of X and Y (some other location.) Then go on to describe the incident. Holster your weapon and leave the 100 radius around the scene, if you tactically can. DO NOT DESCRIBE YOURSELF OR WHAT YOU ARE WEARING. DISPATCHERS HAVE PUT THAT OUT AS THE DESCRIPTION OF CALLER AS THE DESCRIPTION OF THE PERP MORE THAN ONCE!
Also, why the location first? If you say, “This is an emergency, I’m at the corner of X and Y, X and Y and ..... you get cut off, they are still going to send response.
If you just say, Oh my Gawd, there just been a bad shooting at the gas station by.... and get cut off, you are SOL, BECAUSE, WHICH GAS STATION?
Yea, I know, GPS and tower triangulation, but why add time when seconds count.
be well.
close...Illinois
Good- someone who walks into a bank and pulls out a gun does so with the understanding that it may very well be the last thing they ever do- and that is as it should be- choose that lifestyle- then suffer the consequences-
>> It boggles the mind ...
Agreed.
So what was the perps story?
