When the earth gets going, there can be a lot of trouble in a number of places. The series of New Madrid giant earthquakes in 1811-12 is a case in point. In that period there was a major earthquake that killed 20,000 people in Caracas, Venezuela. During the 1902 period when Mt. Pelee in Martinique killed at least 30,000 people, nearby St. Vincent also had an earthquake that killed several thousand, and in Guatemala Santa Maria killed another 5,000. I think there was other activity in Central America as well, all around the edges of the Caribbean Plate.
