In an extraordinary development Thursday, the Obama administration announced a series of sanctions against Russia. Thirty-five Russian nationals will be expelled from the country. President Obama issued a terse statement seeming to blame Russia for the hack of the Democratic National Committee emails.
"These data theft and disclosure activities could only have been directed by the highest levels of the Russian government," he wrote.
Russia at first pledged, darkly, to retaliate, then backed off. The Russian press today is even reporting that Vladimir Putin is inviting "the children of American diplomats" to "visit the Christmas tree in the Kremlin," as characteristically loathsome/menacing/sarcastic a Putin response as you'll find.
This dramatic story puts the news media in a jackpot. Absent independent verification, reporters will have to rely upon the secret assessments of intelligence agencies to cover the story at all.
Many reporters I know are quietly freaking out about having to go through that again. We all remember the WMD fiasco.
"It's déjà vu all over again" is how one friend put it.
You can see awkwardness reflected in the headlines that flew around the Internet Thursday. Some news agencies seemed split on whether to unequivocally declare that Russian hacking took place, or whether to hedge bets and put it all on the government to make that declaration, using "Obama says" formulations....

It really is easy to spot a fake news story. Fake news stories are always just too perfect for the daily DNC talking points to be true. When I saw the breaking news that CNN was reporting the closure of the Anglo-American School in Moscow, I was almost certain it was fake news. Sure enough, a quick Google search yielded a story citing a named spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Now, who are you going to believe, a US State Department source speaking to CNN or the Russian Foreign Ministry?
The answer is so obvious that it’s a rhetorical question. Thirty years ago ... heck, ten years ago ... I could never have predicted that the Russians would be more trustworthy than the US State Department.
or a disgruntled Bernista at DNC
When you’ve lost The Rolling Stone ...
I’ve said this from the beginning. Obama hates Clinton. He didn’t want her to succeed, he stabbed her in the back. Her reward for stepping down in 2008 and letting Obama be President promising her next time, you.
On one hand he would come out and campaign here and there; throw out a snotty remark, laugh, about Trump and Repubs. Then he would lay low until he was needed again.
Obama is in his element on campaigning- he just didn’t do much for Hillary at all for her campaign.
He wants the power for his Foundation post President- CF would be in competition with him.
I tend to doubt it, as it came too late to influence the recounts or the Electors. More like a last stab at trying to weaken Trump.

Operation Mockingbird - Government shaping the news
Operation Northwoods and Mongoose - proposal for false flag on American citizens, to blame Cuba - vetoed by Kennedy.
CIA - Assassinations of world leaders, fomentation of instability to achieve regime change, hiring mob to do dirty works etc.
Gulf of Tonkin-excuse to expand the Vietnam War.
Just a few of the little Gems from declassified materials"
Thanks for the reminder !
What do all these things have in common ?
ANSWER : CIA, State Department, "Seventh Floor Shadow government", complicit press and media, complicit and feckless Congress, unwitting fools (but I repeat myself).
Yeah, it is the Wag the Dog stick you are smelling.
That’s different...a leftist source thinking for itself.
You know that's a great point. The whole thing about the soviet union was they were a THREAT to the US at the time. Russia today? Not by a long shot. Instead it's ISLAM that's a threat today. The Dems are ALWAYS befuddled on what Americans think.
The Rolling Stone(d) turning on O-bomb. He has now lost all credibility.
We can’t forget that Obama was telling illegals before the election that if they feel like citizens to vote.
I know. I can’t imagine how anyone can deny, with a straight face, that illegals vote. That’s like claiming underage teens never drink, because that would be illegal!
