The U.S. arms industry is ready and capable of boosting production of new ships if President-elect Donald Trump makes good his vow to expand the U.S. Navy to 350 ships, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral John Richardson told Reuters.
Shifting the current target of 308 ships upwards would be "remarkably easy" as long as there is funding to pay the bill, the top uniformed Navy official said in an interview at the annual Reagan National Defense Forum in southern California.
"If it's resourced, it's a matter of working closely with the industrial base, and they definitely are ready to do that," he said, adding the only limiting factor would be hiring and training workers to build the new ships....

First it might be a good idea to fire the people who brought us that nutty Destroyer we can’t buy ammo for, the LCS program, and the USS Ford that needs all kinds of fixes. ( except for the coed sleeping areas)
Im all for new ships and the ship builders are surely salivating and ready but Trump needs to be clear from the get go that the old days are over. The new buyer wont tolerate cost overuns, missed deadlines and “government prices”
. They will have to earn their money by delivering a top notch product on time on budget and without waste fraud and abuse of they taxpayera wallet.
Take an Iowa class battleship out of mothballs. Give nuclear propulsion and state of the tech. New ammo for the 16 inch guns and a panoply of offensive and defensive missiles.
Then sail her up and down the Formosa straight 24/7/365
The LCS?...This would not be tolerated by Donald Trump, the man who is on time or early and under budget on big, beautiful projects.
The US Navys Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) are over budget, far behind schedule and cannot perform any of their designated missions. Other than that, they somehow usually manage to float.
Exactly.
On. Time. Under. Budget.
The problem is the Navy wants those worthless LCS “Frigates”.
A 4,000 ton ship with no VLS.
A fools errand.
“New ammo for the 16 inch guns and a panoply of offensive and defensive missiles.”
Scratch the guns, their utility is so diminished as to be passed.
I like the idea of a new power plant. Add Aegis and 252 VLS tubes and I’m in.
Peace through strength. What a concept.
You have to clear out about 35 miles of Washington DC bureaucracy and support services contractors to accomplish that.
First you spend about 5 years and twice as much money as you have on an Analysis of Alternatives, well first you spend 5 years arguing about the process you will follow in concluding the analysis of alternatives.
There is a reason that DC has among the highest housing prices in the United States - and it isn't civil service salaries that are supporting that either.
We need a new Battleship—The Trump Class—smaller—more like a heavy cruiser, armed with Rail guns, rockets, AA systems as well as 8 inch cannons—in a rapid fire systems. Name them after Native American Tribes (like Civil war Monitors) First one The USS Mohawk (a new york tribe) —Lots of automatic systems so a smaller crew could be used. It should be an armored monster to reflect the new USN. We should also have smaller—destroyer sized— Drone Carriers for the drones to fight the naval ears of the 21st Century —And subs, lots of quite, deep diver subs—Hunter killers with all the electronic gear we can fit on them. First one the USS Hunley.
I dunno - some of the sub-caliber sabot options, as well as multiple-warhead prototypes for those guns are worth considering.
I love your idea of bringing back Indian names like the USN used during the War Between the States. They had a certain ring to them that has never been duplicated.
Nice!
seems like we ought to be researching and developing advanced countermeasures for anti ship missiles before we start investing in more ships.
Don’t worry. Those positions are part of Trump’s DNA.
Whoever built the new zumwalt needs to be given the task of assembling porta potties in Greenland.
float being the operative word. they lose propulsion just slapping the sides.
Given the advances in Artillery tech, a Modernized Iowa, with modernized shells, could throw exploding Volkswagens 150-300 miles away.
