That is the problem, it is an outdated design. Many of the more modern firearms are much more reliable. The 1911 design is certainly not outdated and has been copied and extrapolated into many variants.
The design is also reliable - the reason that it is not a contender here is cost. It takes a heck of a lot of machining to make a 1911

You are correct cost throws out the 1911. May I recomend the Springfield XD in .45, it is an excellent shooter.

I built a Para-Ordnance P13.45 from one of their frame kits and aftermarket G.I. parts. My P-O carries 13+1 rounds of .45 ACP vs. 7+1 for the M1911A1, yet it weighs the same. The frame accommodates a double stack magazine but is only 1/8-inch wider than the M1911A1. I like this pistol very much and it gets the job done very nicely, thank you.
