He hinted in his last remarks that he was holding back "to be nice". If she continues negative, he gets to unload when it does the most damage. If he weren't even or a little ahead he would not have the luxury of holding off. The fact that he did, and clearly on purpose, shows that he is in a solid position.

It's a bit of a balancing act, defending yourself against lies, but also not coming across as the meanie unless it is necessary.
