The liberals came up long before the hippies. Every time a society has enough wealth to support a leisure class you get liberalism.
One generation works hard to increase the prosperity and security of a nation.
Their reward?
Their children whining about all the so-called injustices. How some people didn't fare as well as others, and how some didn't play nice to get where they are.

The 60's generation is the epitome of your synopsis. Robert Bork clearly explains it in his book, "Sliding Towards Gomorrah". It's about 15 years old, but details how we came to this point of socialism through over-indulged directionless 60's children (me included until I joined Navy). The Greatest Generation won the liberty of the world but lost their children. Why that occurred is debatable.
