To answer that ask yourself three questions

1. Is human nature different today than it was 80 years ago?
2. Is human nature different in the USA than in other countries?
3. Are there precedents where the government told it's minions to violate the fundamental God given rights of it's citizens?

Let's answer these:

1. Human nature is the same now as it has been throughout history
2. Nothing special about the location of the USA that makes it's people any different - still human
3. There are numerous precedents from Pol Pot to Stalin to Hitler to the Vichey French government where the police and the military willingly , enthusiastically, and without regard for the basic right of humans to live, murdered and imprisoned hundreds of millions of their fellow citizens to follow the decrees of a tyrannical government.

So anyone who thinks it can't happen here is terminally and foolishly optimistic. 6 million Jews didn't think that their government would murder them simply because of their ethnicity. Boy were they wrong. Millions of gun owners think that the police and military won't kill them if they resist gun confiscation. History says they're wrong. The police are NOT our friends. They are the agents of the government charged with enforcing the will of the politicians and bureaucrats, and they will do so.
