I had never heard of the “alt-right” until the other day

It is a real term, not made up by Hillary. I would describe them as the Millenial generation of conservatives. One of their greatest strengths, and biggest differences with older conservatives, is that they simply don't care what names progressives call them. A traditional conservative will curl up into a ball when a progressive calls them a racist, and engage in a futile battle to prove the negative that they are not. An Alt-right person, when called a racist, will just laugh at them and fight back.

Not in the context of Hillary and Ryan refer to “alt right”. They are speaking of the fringe racialists and White Power types. They want to roll anybody who opposes them in with those clowns, marginalize them and destroy them.
