In our day they just painted some of the blood (mixed with a few other choice bits) onto the face of the lucky hunter and he had to wear it until after supper. If he shot and missed, they cut his shirt tail. No heart biting.
How about that scene in Red Dawn where the kid shoots his first deer & the others tell him to drink its blood.
“You gotta do it, it’s the spirit of the deer.”
He gulps down a canteen cup full & is congratulated, “You did that, his blood is yours. My Dad said when you do that, there’s gonna be something different about you. Always.”
