After a century of shooing away hunters, tending to trails and helping visitors enjoy the wonder of the natural world, the guardians of Americas most treasured places have been handed an almost unimaginable new job slowing the all-out assault climate change is waging against national parks across the nation.
As the National Parks Service (NPS) has charted the loss of glaciers, sea level rise and increase in wildfires spurred by rising temperatures in recent years, the scale of the threat to US heritage across the 412 national parks and monuments has become starkly apparent.
As the National Parks Service turns 100 this week, their efforts to chart and stem the threat to the countrys history faces a daunting task. Americas grand symbols and painstakingly preserved archaeological sites are at risk of being winnowed away by the crashing waves, wildfires and erosion triggered by warming temperatures.
The Statue of Liberty is at high exposure risk from increasingly punishing storms. A national monument dedicated to abolitionist Harriet Tubman, who will be enshrined on a new $20 note, could be eaten away by rising tides in Maryland. The land once walked by Pocahontas and Captain John Smith in Jamestown, the first English settlement in the US, is surrounded by waters rising at twice the global average and may be beyond rescue.

Not to mention arsonists.
NOT TO MENTION arsonists.
How is this physically possible? The only way would be not that the sea is rising, but this bit of lad is sinking.
I know a faster and better way to end national parks as we know them. Give those land takings back to the individual states!
The time has come
A fact’s a fact
It belongs to them
Let’s give it back.
I prefer to agree with them on this, and here is why:
This is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT, American Lives are at stake here, I propose we IMMEDIATELY CONDEMN ALL PROPERTY WITHIN 5 MILES of ANY COAST, All Property within the 5 mile ZOne is declared UNINHABITABLE AT ANY TIME, All Properties that have ANY type of Living Quarters or the Capability to Accomodate Overnight Stays, SHALL BE DEMOLISHED IMMEDIATELY, All Property Owners affected SHALL PAY for ALL Cleanup of Uninhabitable Properties. For the Safety of All Americans./
you first
Oh darn! Well, lets sell it to investors. Build some condos, golf courses, logging, manage it so the forest fires have much less impact ... mine the sh*t out of it for natural resources. Jobs, opportunity, wealth. And have it even better. Which naturally happens whenever the government, any government, is not involved.
YAY! We can divert all of those dollars for unused National Parks to the Climate Change coffers! /sarc
Have you all looked lately at the USA acreage make up the national parks/national land? Some are historic, some are recreation areas, some are battlefields, etc., but they are Fed run. Just noticed a few days ago. There are some states where most of the state is national. ALL of Michigan’s UP is a national forest for instance and is administered by the U.S. Forest Service.
When did all this happen?
according to al gore the planet ahs already gone up in a might conflagration......
this story smells ..... welll....like bullsheet
The national debt will end the national parks. I.e., collateral to the Chinese
Yes that pesky item seems to get buried.
I read an AP article last week regarding the apprehension of an arsonist who set a California wildfire that burnt numerous homes.
The sea rise stories are baloney. The glaciers have been retreating since the late 1800’s (so much for CO2 emissions), and the forest fire havoc is largely due to decades of fire suppression which allows undergrowth to increase unhampered until fires won’t put out themselves.
Aside from the fact that the Constitution does not authorize the federal government to either establish or maintain national parks . . .
It’s the crazy libs who leave crap all over the place when they play mountain climber.
How many national parks contain any glaciers?
How many national parks are anywhere near the sea, where a slight rise would cause any noticeable change?
Wildfires occur frequently in national parks, and they have nothing to do with "rising temperatures," except as the proximate cause of some fairly intense rises in local temperature.
Oh No spontaneous combustion at the Equator will be a very big problem and all the Water will turn to steam ,D’oh
Is it because the government has complained that black people don’t want to go to national parks?
Unadulterated horse crap! Fresh, steamy, green and wet.
The National Parks System was established in 1916 following the establishment of Yellowstone National Park in 1872.
The National Forest System was established in 1891.
So, about 100 - 144 years ago depending upon which Congressional act you want to cite as the real beginning of it.
