Prayers for you.
If I remember correctly, you’re paid from the date of your approval - less any legal fees, which are capped by SS if you use a lawyer to file. So you should get a lump sum check from the date you’re approved to they day it’s actually automatically deposited.

What software do you know?
I don’t know how technically-inclined you are, but here’s a list of companies that hire at-home workers: http://www.thepennyhoarder.com/125-work-from-home-companies/
Most of the jobs are for programmers, but there are some that are customer-service jobs.
I’ve worked several jobs like that. In fact, I have 2 of them right now. Being able to telecommute is a Godsend for anyone with mobility issues!
Prayers up for you, my FRiend.
Please don’t loose faith or hope, because I was in the same situation on Jan. 25. 52 y/o construction manager, unemployed and living off my savings. It seemed as though no matter what job I applied for (Construction Management, laborer, retail sales, etc.) nobody was interested. It was truly a very disheartening, depressing, and discouraging experience. Trust in the Lord. Trust in yourself and keep knocking on doors and you will succeed.
To wit:
Ask and it shall be given;
Seek and you shall find;
Knock and it shall be opened into you.
Despite what others may say as to the interpretation of this passage, I have always believed (and still do believe) that God does not speak in riddles. He says what he means and means what he says. Believe it. Act upon it and allow His grace to do its work.
Best wishes and blessings to you.

Let us know what happens...but how about a reply once in awhile.
There are organizations that only find jobs for the disabled. I don’t know the names of the ones in your area but your employment office should be able to help.
Can you sit on a stool and type on a computer key board
or draw on a drafting table? I do, but I can’t walk.
Have you tried temporary agencies?
Are you saying you filed for disability through your employer or Social Security Disability?
I support myself doing CAD work from home.
90% of my jobs come from my free ad on craigslist.
Here is a link to free CAD software: http://www.3ds.com/products-services/draftsight-cad-software/
Best wishes!
There are lots of companies that outsource services to people who work from home. You could provide customer support from home using your computer. Check out the type of work you could pick up on Amazon Mechanical Turk, too. You get to work whenever you want to. Today’s “gig economy” makes it easy to pick up odd jobs at home.
I can help with a franklin. where?
I know how this feels, took me 11 months to find a job after the owner of old company sold out. Now I work lifting heavy boxes, and 10 minute morning break and a 15 minute lunch, if I’m lucky. It’s no fun at 58, I should be looking forward to retirement!

No offense, but after working the last 25 years averaging about 300 hours per month, I wish I had only paid 200k in taxes. That covers 2010+ for me. What is my benefit? Never taken workers comp, never took a dime from the Feds of other people’s money, never asked for a handout.
Sorry, but why aren’t you working at something else in the meantime until you can get a job for your trade?
Smh.
Has a “notice to vacate’ been given to you yet by the landlord? Have you gone to court yet? Has the date you need to vacate been determined by the court?
Prayers up.
I would try this first BEFORE selling any items you may still need like furniture, vehicle, etc. You and her are facing a long term situation with disability.
For what it's worth I speak from experience. My wife was disabled a c-5/C-6 incomplete quad for 30 years. 22 years ago I became disabled and when we lost my income and only had her check it was rough going for a while until my appeal went through and I was approved. If she isn't drawing a SSDI check tell that to DHS and both of you file for SSI and Medicaid.
You have another emergency option. Call the city housing authority and explain your entire situation they may be able to get you into emergency housing. Good Luck. Yes a lot of jobs in drafting and engineering have been outsourced off shore. My late B.I.L. found himself out of a job when he was about 54. He was a mechanical engineer specializing in HVAC. The Radioactive Waste Storage Facility in Carlsbad,NM he helped design the management came in and did a huge layoff of the engineering dept one morning and he was among the ones they let go. It took him several years to get hired at anything other than a Temp services company.
