After the deadly crash of a Navy Blue Angel F-18 last week in Tennessee killing USMC Capt. Jeff Kuss, a San Francisco lawmaker has renewed a call to ban the group from flying over the city's populated areas. Also, John Avalos, a member of the city's board of supervisors, has called for the board to revive an initiative banning the Angels from flying over populated areas of the city.
The Blue Angels fly over San Francisco as part of Fleet Week, an annual outreach event that attracts over a million people every year. This year the event will be held between the 3rd and 10th of October. Similar events are held in other cities, including New York.
City Supervisor Avalos told The San Francisco Chronicle: "It's about them crashing and hitting a building a place where people live." He also stated: "It's about the terror that they cause in people when they strafe neighborhoods. That's something I hear about all the time when Blue Angels fly overhead." The elected official obviously doesnt know what strafe means. He also doesnt realize that the Blue Angels F-18s are unarmed when they are performing.
Avalos insists that the jets are a threat to safety. Accidents happen and they are rare. Maybe Mr. Avalos should take a look at the San Francisco International Airport, where a 747 can do more damage that an Airshow F-18. Odds are that airshow fans will face greater danger driving to the show than being hit or strafed by a Blue Angel F-18.

“It’s about them crashing and hitting a building a place where people live.”
But it’s perfectly fine for ILLEGAL ALIEN CRIMINAL INVADERS TO RAPE, ROB, MURDER, AND COMMIT MAYHEM. Hell we will even PAY them to Stay Here and give them a License, Medical, Housing, Food, Clothing, and a free cell phone.
I’d like to see a cost benefit study on the Blue Angels.
If Fag City is having the vapors over the Blue Angels, I am sure there are a dozen cities quite eager to host them, all within 100 miles...
Good riddance.
I was raised and schooled in San Francisco, but left in 1964, and then visited twice a year. The place deteriorated to the point now I only visit every 3 to 4 years, when I absolutely have to.
The Blue Angels, like the Air Force and the Marines, don't fly for entertainment. Entertainment is just a bonus for the millions of civilians who enjoy watching their skill.
I suppose in a sterile world, they should only be allowed to fly when in actual combat.
That would work just great.
Let’s not kid ourselves, shall we? What the blue angels do isn’t training. If it were, we’d be losing 10% of Navy pilots across the board. But we’re not, thank God. You want to suggest that the rest of our Navy’s pilots are inadequately trained? My brother in law would take serious exception to that.
I’m curious where you get your “10% of Blue Angels pilots” crashing. I’ve been following them since I was a kid many years ago, and I can only remember a few crashes—nowhere near 10%.
Not saying you’re wrong, but where did you pull that number from?
I Googled it following last week’s crash. The source seemed reliable.
Reagan gave them their disarmament wish when he closed all the military bases in the Bay Area.
Thousands of San Franciscans lost their jobs almost overnight and yet Feinstein, Boxer and Pelosi still have theirs.
Ron “Red” Dellums was the only casualty.
