Because Ali, like all other American black converts, perceived Christianity to be the white man's religion, and therefore that they'd be getting back at whitey (and Jews) by converting to Islam. That's pretty much what this phenomenon is about.

I’m surprised that more people aren’t aware of present day slavery in Africa. The “trade,” industry is owned by blacks and Arabs. Many are Muslim, some are communist.

The slaves can be of any ethnic group.
