My old hometown is going overboard with political correctness. It removed a Confederate monument that had stood for over a century, if that says anything. This is not a place to have a family. No future here, no work. I’m a freelancer and can be anywhere. But not here. This is no place for a young man who is coming out of years of some very rough life, to get that fresh crack at life.

Conservative, jobs available.
Avoid the big cities such as Houston and Dallas.

I was in your situation 40 years ago. I finally moved from Detroit to central Kentucky. Never regretted it.
No one mentioned that to keep in touch with family that you are close to that you need to visit them and go to funerals, weddings, etc. You should stay within one gas tank drive from the family that matters to do this. If your family is scattered then it will not matter.
Yes, it will likely cost you ten thousand dollars just to get situated some place. Make a list of expected expenses.
