For people who enjoy it, bargain-hunting combines all of the primal fun of hunting with no threat of being trampled by an antelope. Thats why, amid recent fretting that American department stores and malls are doomed, there remains a bright spot in the retail business. TJX, parent company of off-price stores T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods, reported better-than-expected results this quarter, unlike its department store competitors.
It isnt just residual frugality from the Great Recession thats sending shoppers to off-price stores. That explains why department stores from Lord & Taylor to Macys to Kohls are rushing to open their own outlets or off-price shops.
Constantly changing assortment, the excitement of finding a bargain, and the sense of urgency associated with having to secure a product before it is sold out, all give consumers a reason to regularly visit shops, the chief executive of Conlumino, a consumer research firm, explained in a note. While regular department stores might have constantly changing sales, they dont offer the opportunity to maybe find a designer item at a low, low price.
Sure, what off-price stores actually offer are lower-quality merchandise made for that market and original prices with no basis in reality. The free market, however, has spoken, and sales are up in off-price stores while department and specialty clothing stores flail.
Goodwill is excellent. Find lots of good stuff.
I have one a couple of miles away and never shop there. They don’t have crap. There’s another one not far from the marina where our boat is. They get nice stuff. A lot of people don’t know that all the discount stores....the Rack, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, etc send everything out of their distribution centers via zip code. The higher priced your zip code is the better stuff they get.
I just read that TJ Maxx and Marshalls have the same bathroom policy as Target.
If that’s true, it will hurt them.
I am a fan of even lower priced stores like Dollar Tree.”
This has turned into one of our fav places to shop. They have great ginger snaps made in Abilene, Texas. If you get there early in the week there is even great selection of bread. Grandson loves their frozen waffles - and I can’t make 8 of them for $1.00. Plus ours has a great card selection which are two for a dollar. Really beats spending $4.95 for one from from Hallmark. Buy a lot of our business office supplies there, too. Just a great one stop shopping place.
Almost all chinese or foreign made items.
shop those stores, but you are not supporting American manufacturing.
A gluten free diet keeps waffles off my shopping list, but Dollar Tree aspirin at $1 for a bottle of 175 tablets is impossible to beat and I go through a bottle a month. My ordinary drinking glasses and coffee cups are also from Dollar Tree and have proved to be sturdy enough that none of them have been brokenover three years of use.
Love these stores - especially the food. At Christmas, they have British items like Turkish Delight which you cannot find anywhere in America. Also, exotic spices, jams, salts, mustards, etc. In fact, their kitchen and dining items are lovely. They recently had copper pots and pans - beautifully polished at low prices - for sale.
We have a winter place, in Fort Lauderdale, and in our closest mall we have a Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Ross and Home Goods. It’s one stop shopping. At home,, in MA.. I would have to drive in 4 different directions and we don’t have Ross.
Probably right. I have not been in those particular stores but I have been in Ross. Everything in there is from China (or Asia somewhere).
I recently found 2 Nike runners which were discontinued but in more than good’ shape. i Googled the models and they are considered as classics. Plus my GF found a pair of Prada shoes in excellent shape, and that model cost $400 on Ebay. Well, we’re in the Hollywood Goodwill locations so it’s not surprising.
Id rather shop at Goodwill for some stuff rather than fork over my money to tranny and fag loving stores like Target or JCP..
