Maybe the biggest unintentional insult I have ever received came from a family member of mine. The loving persion REALLY did not mean it as an insult.

My immediate family (wife and I) had decided that we didn’t want to live in the DC area. We wanted to move back to the Midwest. (We never wanted to live there but I had been transferred with a GREAT employer and couldn’t get RE-transferred out). I sought out new employment and accepted an offer that would pay for my family to move where I wanted, with the company I chose to work for. An In-Law commented to my wife, “Your husband is ‘so lucky’. Everythings always seems to go his way.”

My wife was completely dumbfounded at why I thought that was so insulting. I know she didn’t mean it that way. But for those of us who take charge in our lives, work hard and earn our place, LUCK plays a VERY small part. We make our luck by creating opportunities, credentials, experience, records and successes.

But this President wouldn’t have ANY experience in the type of “luck” that most Americans EARN.

I’ve had people tell me how lucky hubby and I are. I explain to them that it wasn’t luck that has our house paid for, or the Mercedes and the Jag in the garage. That it isn’t luck that allows us to be able to afford to do more or less whatever we want. I tell them we both worked our azzes off while young and lived within our means so that we could be set up after the kid was gone and retire early. We worked Christmas and birthdays. We had our Christmas dinner the day before because he had to work. I was never home on any holiday but Christmas because I had to work.
And we never whined about it, not once. We just trudged on looking down the road.
