That’s roughly what my memory was ... Trump took the ‘outer’ boroughs. Staten Island is the last GOP holdout in NYC, still with its heavy Italian and Irish communities vs the rest of the city (save Manhattan) that has neighborhoods fluctuating continuously with the various waves of ethnics.
It makes sense that Kasich would carry Manhattan. Aren’t all Manhattan’s Republicans segregated into one or two precincts in the Upper East Side?
I’m pretty sure that I remember someone in the press saying that the Upper East Side was one of Trump’s worst areas in the state. It made up the bulk of the one and only congressional district in the whole state that Trump lost. He actually did noticeably better among the few Republicans in Spanish Harlem than he did with the rich whites in the southern part of the Upper East Side.
He did better in Midtown too, including the area around where Trump Tower is. Besides Staten Island, Trump also did well in his native Queens overall.
