I was reminded they do go to Virginia beach
And the local Miami thuggery have ruined South Beach
We go to 30a between Destin and Panama City Beach
My fav spot there is Rosemary Beach in off season when I can afford it....otherwise Seagrove or Grayton or Dune Allen
House right on beach....
I went to Fairhope high school in 75...grad....one year and lived at Point Clear....id live there too if I could afford it
I like St George Island too but wifey finds it too isolated
Fort Morgan in my youth was sparse and huge dunes.....no high rises on the entire panhandle then or Alabama and no perdido really
Destin had the holiday inn....old school....someone built a tall octagon Quality Inn that failed
It was perfect......1966....shell drives...
Spent several summers, maybe...’66-70 in Gulf Shores. Family and neighbors family(8 boys!) stayed at an old place called “Ashwanders”. Had their own private pier. Kids ranged from 4 to about 10 at the oldest. We’d take off in the morning fishing, swimming or just hanging out on the beach. Might come in for lunch. Might not. Somehow none of us ever drowned or got eaten by a shark or anything.
All the old places got blown away by a hurricane. Fredrick, I think, in about 1980. Made room for all the damn condo’s.
Cool stretch of beach at the State Park. ‘Bout the only place at Gulf Shores/Orange Beach that reminds me of the “old days”.
New favorite area is Mexico Beach to Port St. Joe, Apalach and St George Island. Wanna go fishing the bays just holla. I can set you up!
