Texas isn’t a big basketball state, their sport is football.

True to some extent, but the Dallas Mavs and San Antone Spurs prevented Lebron's Miami Heat from having a winning record in the NBA Finals.

So even with Texas's football emphasis, it kicks ass in other sports, too.
