Except that there is now high-end office space and swanky malls sitting on the land where the mills used to be.

Almost unbelievable hearing someone running for public office in this country even speaking this way. I like it. Whether it can be done is another question. Nicer than hearing the opposite postion that we have heard over the last 30 years.

How? By raising the tariffs on imported steel?

You can bring back the coal industry in Pittsburgh, but not the steel industry. Back in 1880 when the steel industry in America was taking off, it took three tons of coal to every ton of ore to make steel. So because of transport costs, the mills were located near the coal fields and they brought the ore to them. That’s why there were historically no steel mills in northern Minnesota.

Since the 1920s, increased efficiency in the process requires only about one ton of coal per ton of ore to make steel. It no longer makes sense to locate the mills on the coal fields. Instead, if you’re going to bring back the American steel industry, it makes sense to do so on the south shore of Lake Michigan, where you can ship the ore by freighter down the lakes and bring the coal a short distance by rail from southern Illinois or Indiana.

I would have expected a businessman to know this.

What’s your point? That you are dumb enough to take Trump literally here? What Trump is saying is he will do his best to keep the steel and coal industry we have and build on this. Trump tariffs will bring back some steel industry.

As opposed to Democrats who want to kill coal and have been somewhat successful. In contrast to Cruz who has said nothing about tariffs because he is a GOPe creature

No, I don’t want the coal and steel industries back. I can’t agree with that. Why would I want to bring back those kinds of jobs when some many people are now used to and fully adjusted to a salary of a burger flipper?

Next thing you know the guy will be proposing to eliminate H1B visas so people can’t come the the U.S. and take away the few remaining good paying jobs.

Trump is saying he will do his best on steel and coal. A lot better than Hillary and Ted Cruz. Will he literally bring back the good ol days of American steel and coal. No but lets get back to this as much as we can and put men back to work!!

Trump got a YUGE applause when he mentioned West Virginia.

The coal is still in the ground. The skilled miners are still there. The infrastructure of railroads and barges can be brought back up to speed. It’s FEDERAL regulations, put into place at the behest of green pandering politicians that STOPPED most, if not all, coal production. Get rid of the regs, the administration that caused the damage, and thus “coal is brought back.”

Trump is willing and able to say that. The insiders, not so much.

Excellent. And Trump will do it too Opposite of Obama, who was working on eliminating US industries.

He drew the verbal Norman Rockwell pictures in just a couple of sentences

I've said it for months

All the steel mills and steel related industries in and around Pittsburgh are graveyards that, imo, could be RELATIVELY inexpensive to rejuvenate and upgrade

I don't know that much about a lot of things, but if you could see the empty parking lots that used to employ thousands on each shift .... there's money to be made by experienced steel people here in SW Pa.

No, by stopping things like the $1 million fines these companies have to pay every now and then to the Federal Government and a host of other things that will allow our companies to compete again.

Where do these nits come from that can't figure out we are in a death spiral. You seriously don't want good paying jobs. Oh wait, I get it, those were union jobs and you hate union workers. And you are worried the price of your toaster purchased at Walmart will go up by 10 cents.

Don't worry, you almost have your way. The middle class is nearly wiped out. It is so bad that Walmart is now having problems at the Dollar stores eat into their business because that's all anyone can now afford.

So sickening this mentality that is out there that thinks it is evil for a husband or wife to be able to earn enough to actually take care of their family and have some semblance of a decent life. So disgusting. So very, very disgusting.

Yes, I do. Tariffs only serve to protect businesses that cannot compete and end up costing the consumer more.

Specialty steel (pipes for one product example) WAS making a comeback due to the fracking/drilling on the Marcellus Shale. If your in PA, I will concede that Corbett had many faults BUT his support of the energy industry in western PA brought a lot of jobs. The Dem Gov. Wolf thinks we should be more like upstate New York...cause who wants jobs?
