I’ve given this a little thought. Running for President is a mammoth project. It has millions of pieces, not just your message. I would talk to everyone who has ever run for President that would answer the phone or eat lunch with me. From thise conversations I would have a minumum list of people I needed to hire immediately and a list of some possible hires. I’d interview, vet and listen to possible campaign managers. Once I hired the top guys together we’d plot out an Gantt chart and decide who to hire next. With the next hires in place, you discuss and choose a plan. Make time lines and Gantt charts. Assign responsibilities and tasks. Determine what other personnel you are going to need and when. The pieces include messaging, finance, candidate qualification/rules. Voter identification. Volunteer recruitment.

This thing has millions of moving pieces. The people in charge of each of those pieces have to stay on track and still be adaptable enough to makes changes when required. You want to hire the best people and in this election cycle the candidates numbered in the double digits, all competing for those personnel.

Paul Manafort has been an advisor in some capacity to the campaigns of Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bob Dole and George W. Bush. He is just as much an insider as anyone Cruz has hired. Hiring the best, even if they worked for the competition makes sense. It does NOT mean you’ve adopted the ideas of your competition.
