Welcome to Our Post-Literate Political Culture

By Ian Tuttle March 24, 2016

Donald Trump’s decision not only to threaten Ted Cruz’s wife but, now, to double down and mock her is the most loathsome moment yet in a campaign characterized by vulgarity and bullying. About Trump’s penchant for bullying I wrote yesterday.

But about his misogyny, an additional thought. The caption to Trump’s repulsive retweet reads A picture is worth 1000 words, which is generally a stupid thing people say to excuse themselves from the hard work of plumbing their mind for words. In reality, the pictures of Mrs. Trump and Mrs. Cruz reveal nothing.

But, naturally, Trump thinks they do, because Trump works almost exclusively in the realm of images.

Consider Trump’s liberal use of the word “beautiful.” His wife is beautiful, and his daughter. But so are his hotels. So are “American tax dollars,” Trump campaign t-shirts, and standing ovations. So are his websites, and the door he’s going to build into the wall (also “beautiful”) that he is going to erect between the U.S. and Mexico. So is air.

None of those things is beautiful (and describing tax dollars as beautiful is borderline certifiable). But Trump calls them beautiful, because he’s all about appearances. The determinative factor is how things look. It’s the category in which he thinks. As he told Esquire in 1991: “You know, it doesn’t really matter what [the media] write, as long as you’ve got a young and beautiful piece of ass.” (snip)

It doesn’t matter as long as everyone sees that you’ve got a young and beautiful “piece of ass.” Trump does not care about actual elegance, class, or beauty, which require cultivation to be able to discern. (His various construction projects are evidence enough of this. The Taj Mahal is beautiful.

First you need to be commended. Unlike other Trumpkins, you offer an argument, not insults.

But your logic does not hold. Bush and Co dislike Trump for being a vulgarian. Trump attacked Jeb’s wife. They are embarrassed (as we all should be) of Trump’s boorish behavior (like allusions to his manhood on public TV) to say nothing of the fact that he is conman and snake oil salesman. He tells you one thing on deportation and another to the editorial board of the NY Times behind closed doors. Have Trump tell the NY Times to release the tapes?

Can Trump please explain to thinking minds how he plans to identify, locate, and detain 11-15 million illegals, including families with young children, hold them in massive detention centers, and then have a sea of jumbo 747s to transport them, after processing, to some 40 different countries bearing in mind that some 40% of illegals are visa overstayers. And then please have Trump tell us whether he plans to defy what would certainly be a raft of federal court injunctions.

All well and good but you’re not addressing the reality of Cruz. Amnesty money is backing him, yes or no??

Cruz vows to rescind each one of Obama’s amnesty executive orders on Day 1 and vows to deport all illegals by a variety of methods, and immediately cut off all funding to sanctuary cities. Most important, unlike Trump, there will be no touch back program in brining the “good” illegals back

what are you saying? Hide what donald thinks about women because it isn’t flattering to his image? IF you can’t see it it doesn’t exist- is that what you’re saying?

You call it “amnesty” money, others would say “anti-Trump” money. There is also “deportation” money backing him by millions of small donors.

Lol, you are seriously not paying attention.

They will force amnesty regardless of how much money the little people throw in.

C’mon, be for real.

Oh please, now you sound rather schitzoid, the very things you claim Trump cannot do, you believe Cruz will? With who is backing him, you honestly cannot buy this line of fantasy.

And stop with the lame touchback gig, anyone paying attention knows exactly what he meant and it’s hardly in the vein of amnesty.

Cruz will give you amnesty, his backers will insure it. It will be cloaked in language that low info voters will swallow.

See steel, he isn’t likely to make it and in which case if they give you Ryan/Romney, we will get amnesty.
If he does slide in, we still get amnesty.

How does this work for you??????
