I noticed some LED street lights the other day. Apparently they are really taking off in that application. One of these days, only old timers will remember the orange-y look of sodium lights.
They put in LED runway lights at NAS Whidbey Island. Absolutely amazing.
It’s almost time to retire all those “How many x does it take to change a light bulb?” jokes. Once all the current bulbs are swapped out for LEDs, the young ‘uns won’t even know what it means to change a light bulb.
LED reliability will be HUGE for street lights and other bulbs in difficult-to-reach locations.
The prison I work at just went to LEDs for all of its security lighting. What a difference! And the payoff in energy savings is about 3-4 years from what I’ve heard.

I am a fan of LED lighting, however they do have some drawbacks.
I live in Wisconsin and our city decided to install LED lighting for the stop lights. They failed to take into account that the traditional lamps melted the ice and snow. It made for interesting driving not knowing whether to stop or accelerate at the intersections.
