“Heâs simply a mentally unstable individual and a pathological narcissist, a man with no fixed ideology other than the worship of his own personality.”
You’re giving him far too much credit. He’s much simpler than that.
Trump is a salesman, in the business of selling Trump. His only interest is increasing his brand. Every tweet, every Facebook like, every vote; they’re all the same to him.
He lies not because he doesn’t know what’s true but because he knows what each audience wants to hear. And like any good salesman, he tailors his pitch to adapt to the mark. And sadly, it’s working on too many of us who really ought to know better. But like the best of salesman, he’s only selling what we’re so desperate to buy.

Thanks for your thoughtful and incisive analysis. I don’t disagree with you. Not at all.
But Trump’s Cindy Sheehan “impersonation” Saturday night made me think that in addition to his being a talented TV actor and great salesman, this guy is seriously unstable.
I think this characteristic is not inconsistent with his being a super-salesman. Being dangerously unstable does not rule out being a great salesman, and vice-versa.
