I had an engineering professor who told the story about being a foundation inspector fresh out of college in some big city back east. The professor said that not so much as a concrete slab got poured without the mob being involved one way or another, and there was nothing you could do about it. Another professor told the story about how ‘disposing’ of liquid hazardous waste involved putting it in a tanker truck and a mob hired driver would simply drive around the various turnpikes with the spigot cracked a bit until the truck was empty.
