The first 8 were Colonial British citizens. Not US Citizens as the US did not exist when they were born. America was still a British colony. They became Presidents AFTER the American Revolution which they instigated, fought and won. President Chester Arthur was the original Birther story.

Article II, section I, clause 5:

No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution,

The constitution made an exception for them. It did not make an exception for Ted Cruz.

As the President is required to be a native citizen of the United States. Natives are all persons born within the jurisdiction and allegiance of the United States.
